Sunday, 24th October saw us over at the Colac Wood Show and what a treat. The local wood workers club, Colac Woodturners and Woodcrafters Guild, numbering 30 members, after much discussion, deliberation and organising put on their first ever wood show and presented articles made by members. All timbers used were grown in Australia, and I must say I have changed my view on using Aussie timbers for quality woodworking. See the pics. Gaye was particularly impressed with the Black Heart Sassafras and delighted to hear, when chatting to an enthuastic club member, Norm McGeary that it can be purchased in Tasmania. Not long before we mount an expedition over there to get some of this lovely timber.
Additional to the pics, there was a great number of pieces on display, including fabulous grandfather clocks, jewlery boxes to turned pens.
Karl Karacsay http://www.blackwoodfurniture.com.au/ produced a stand out table in sassafras. The magnificent red gum rocking chair is also his.
Norm was saying that he was not sure if the club would put together another exhibition. I certainly would encourage them to do so. The quality of craftsmanship in local timbers was a joy to see.
