No One Said Retirement Was Meant to Be Easy

More to the point... I have not stopped since retiring. Here is a summary list of recent activities.

Finished work on Friday 15th Feb 2011.

Saturday 16th Feb raced Peregrine and pinged a first. This was our first, first for the season. Great result considering we were short crewed with 5 on board - Ryan, Janet, Me, Charlot and Luke.

Tuesday Tony Minchin invited me to go cycling with his group. A nice 80 klm ride out to the You Yangs and back.

Thursday and Friday Gaye and I drove to Shepparton and spent a couple of days with Steve Regan and Owen. We were keen to get Regan's freezer up to them before the summer finished.

Spent the rest of the week preparing Peregrine for the delivery trip to Sydney. Some bilge pump piping had deteriorated and needed replacing; a couple of hatches were leaking; some shelving needed re-supporting; a cupboard door to be replaced; the HF radio antenna needed re-soldering. Spent some time with Mark Davies a diesel mechanic who serviced the diesel and showed me some maintenance tips. (Mark was later very helpful when we were trying to diagnose the engine problem experienced later during the return trip off Eden. )

Wednesday Barry, Tessa Janet and I took Peregrine from Geelong to Queenscliffe. I decided to stay on board until the Friday to get familiar with all of the boats systems whilst awaiting the delivery crew. We planned to leave for Sydney the following Friday (25th Feb). It was a very pleasant stay at the Queenscliffe Cruising Yacht Club. Met up with a couple aboard their yacht - Ariadne.

Friday, Janet and Tom arrived in the afternoon and we were off for Sydney. A small hiccup with Peregrine on the bottom at the wharf, but some gentle persuasion, namely Tom swinging out on the boom quickly solved this problem.

I will log the delivery trip (which took 4 days and 4 nights) details separately in another post.

Arrived Sydney 1st March about midday. Enjoyed a pinacolada with Janet. Then John drove down and picked me up to take me back to his place for a big sleep.

Gaye travelling via Jetstar arrived in Sydney. Vic picked her up in Manly an the two of them plus Maddie came down to the Middle Harbour Yacht Club where I was working on the boat.

Janet's brother boat needed to be taken from the slip at the Yacht Squadron at Neutral Bay to its mooring back up the river, so Gaye Tom and I helped, but on the way stopped by the Sydney Fish Market for a meal of fish and chips.

Thursday evening (3rd March) caught up with John Sherwood and Sue and Vic, John Maddie Gaye JS and me took Peregrine out for a an evening sail around the Harbour. Great weather, great company, great time. And this was Maddie's (at 15 months old) first sail. I must say she really looked like she enjoyed herself.

The racing campaign commenced with the arrival of Ryan, Shae, Kingie and Charlotte on Friday morning. With all the crew here it took little time to strip the boat of its delivery rig and set up for racing. Off came the roller headsail, the life raft, the delivery main (and just about everything else not bolted down) and on came the racing main and jibs. We spent the afternoon sailing off of Manly getting used to the conditions.

Saturday and Sunday's racing I will log separately.

Sunday evening (6th March) after dressing Peregrine to her delivery garb, everybody departed for Geelong leaving me to look after the boat until the following Thursday night when a new delivery crew made up of Ryan, Charlotte Robbie and Ando would fly up and sail back to Geelong. Well that was the plan.

The couple of days between racing and the return trip I spent re-provisioning the boat (with Gayes assistance) and getting in some quality time with Maddie, who I took to play group on morning, and joying Gaye's, Vics and John company at Dee Why. Who I might just mention, have just purchased their first home. A lovely properly in Allambie. Allambie is near Dee Why just a little closer to the City.

The deliver trip was cut short when after 2 nights and one days sailing and motoring, the prop on the motor failed. This fortunately happened just off Eden. A fishing village on the South NSW coast, so we stopped there to effect repairs. The crew had to return to work, so I stayed with the boat for the week whilst we awaited the delivery of a new prop from Melbourne.

Prop fixed and by Saturday (19th March) 3:00am Ryan and our new assistant delivery crew - Nat were now on board after a grueling 8 hour bus trip from Geelong; and were were once again headed for Geelong. This time we had a forecast of 25 to 30 knots from the East - It was going to be a fast trip.

I'll log the details of this leg separately.

Arrived Geelong 4:00am Monday morning.

Tuesday got a call from Garth, a long time old friend. he was in Melbourne with his partner Louise. So we got together and went for a sail Wednesday. Garth and Louise were great company. They stayed the night and were of Werribee Park Zoo and then Sydney the following morning.

I have been meaning to call friends and let them know how the trip went. But really need more sleep.... And I have only been etired 6 weeks.....
