Australia Day Weekend

Australia Day fell on a Tuesday this year. I was able to get Monday off and so committed to 4 days sailing the Audi Victoria Week Regatta on Peregrine with Ryan, Barry, Tessa, Chris, Kingie, Luke, the two Logs - Adam and Greg, Bazza, Pugs, and Charlotte. Previously known as ANA Regatta, Geelong Week now bloody 'Victoria Week'. We sailed in the cruising div with spinnakers. This is a performance handicap event and we went crap on handicap despite being the most consistent finisher making it across the line 2nd in 3 of the four races.

Friday - The Passage Race was started in a light southerly. The start line was long with the boat end favoured. Barry was spot on with the timing, but an early boat bearing away pushed us up and into a barging position. It was lucky that there was enough gap to get us thru and we were first boat over the line closest to the start boat. Some tossers called us for barging, but didn't follow it thru with a protest. I recon we would have survived it. Our plan was to sail the south side of the course, but ended up on the right. Not too much damage. After a couple of rain fronts came thru the wind settled into a steady 15 - 18 knot sea breeze. We were disappointed after beating the other 4 Sydney 36's and in particular Wild Goats (a newer Syd 36) to find ourselves posting a 24th on handicap. Wild Goats finished 4th on handicap.
The big news of the day was Magic Bullet tee-boned Ten Too (Adams 10) near Point Cook. Ten Too sank in 14 meters of water. Magic Bullet, after taking Ten Too's crew aboard retired with significant damage to the bow. I wonder what the conversation was like on board as they made their way back home?

Saturday - Logs arrived with a slab of Crownies (bottled, not can beer) confirming that we really should be approaching the event in "cruising' mode. Ryan wasn't convinced and after pinging the port end start we were amongst the leaders at the first mark. using the shifts out of Stingray bay better than the others brought us up to lead boat where we stayed for a while. We were glad to be ahead of a big bunch of boats at the You Yangs mark who all fell into a hole. There was plenty of calling for buoy room and other rule requirements. We were never able to run down lead boat before the finish and came across the line 2nd.

Sunday. Again an excellent start. This time were were first boat to the top mark and kept this position until we ran into a hole near the beginning of Hope Town Channel. A competitor Reverie got thru us and we spent the rest of the race casing him down. The race was shortened just before we caught him resulting in another 2nd across the line. In this race we managed to get enough separation from the rest of the fleet to also get 2nd on handicap.

Monday, An early start saw only one AWOL - Greg Logs. He had a big night last night. Very light breeze mainly from the south. Spinnaker start had us 5th boat at the first mark. We won back all but 4 positions by sailing close to the western side of the bay and picking up the sea breeze ahead of the rest of the fleet. Again a 2nd over the line.

Pic taken of Madeleine and Vic during they stay over Christmas. Madeleine is 8 weeks old.

Miss Madison U-6 Oh Boy Oberto Hydroplane

After I start something is seems that I get addicted. Happens all the time, so why am I not surprised that within days of launching my first model boat, I already own another one. I purchased the Miss Madison, for a good price because it was missing a few bits and now am gathering all the necessary parts to get her going. RC Universe Forum is proving to be a great resource for learning.

A Full Weekend

Friday: We launched Baby Doll on the Pond at Ratline Shipyards. Official guests included Flight Captain Laurie, Master Shipwright Clive (Ratty) Gilbert, the good Lady Sponsor Eddie, Gaye and me. With the Flight Captains urging I got a bit excited during the first run and flipped the boat. I tried to claim a rogue wave, then wardrobe malfunction but it was plain to all, it was operator error. After the flip, all the Flight Captain and I could do was fall over in the mud laughing. Not so for the Shipwright. Having been intimately involved in the build of Baby Doll, all he could see was 100's of dollars of electronics getting drowned and took off at a sprint across the pond to retrieve the still revving, upside down boat. The flight Captain regained his composure shortly before me and luckily before the Shipwright retrieved the boat and reminded me to de-throttle the engine. It is well I did otherwise we might have had to add lacerations to the injury the Shipwright sustained during his retrieval dash - namely a corked thigh muscle and a pulled Achilles.

After a quick inspection for water damage, we set Baby Doll back on the lake for further sea trials. I must say she looked a beauty and finely balanced when sitting up on her planing surfaces at 10 knots. All went well until she determined to investigate more closely dry land on the other side of the lake and promptly settled there for a little rest. It was obvious that she was not going to find the water again with out assistance, as it was also obvious that a little walk would do the Shipwrights injuries the world of good. So as the assembled guests settled into afternoon tea of fresh baked sticky date scones and tea, the Shipwright made his way around the lake on his injury healing journey to set baby Doll free of her muddy shackles.

The rest of the day was thankfully incident and injury free.

Saturday: The stars, the moon, the sun and the planets, along with the wind and water conditions all aligned for me today and I got three PB's out on the lake windsurfing.
Top Speed 36.5 k; 5 x 10sec Average: 33.5k; Nautical Mile: 27.5l

A couple of days before Red and Jacques also had a great sail at Conawarree Lake scoring a bunch of PB's. Here are their results at GPS Tema Challenge site. http://gpsteamchallenge.com.au/sailor_session/show?date=2010-01-02&team=29

Sunday: Surf in the morning followed up by and abusive conversation with a fellow motorist who had parked her car in the middle of the road to make a phone call to her Mom. It appears momsie was involved in a car accident and needed to urgently talk to her daughter about it. I suggested that the likely cause of the accident was that momsie was likely on the phone at the time. In the afternoon I attempted to do 100klms on the windsurfer but fell way short. Anyway a hearty chuckle at someone elses expense always makes for a good day.

Monday: A promising weather forecast had Red and me up early for the 4 hour drive to Sandy Point for more windsurfing. It was magic sailing, but the wind was too far south for any descent speeds.

Formal Launch and Sea Trials of 'Baby Doll'

Friday we formally launched Baby Doll. The day was so fantastic that the builder almost broke a leg from just merely looking on.

Eddie's Blanket

Eddie made up a beautiful blanket for Madeleine as a Christmas present. I heard Maddie say 'thank you Eddie' shortly after taking this picture of her (at 8 weeks old). She is such a charmer.

Secet Seatrial of Baby Thwarted by Weed

Connewarre Weed defeats what was proving to be a successful sea trial for Baby Doll Today. At an undisclosed location and at a time designed to attract the least amount of attention from spectators, the owners of Baby Doll set her out on her first sea trial.

Christmas 2009, NY 2010

We had everyone together over the Christmas New Year break. John not in the group photo - he was on a mission to get some kilometers up on the bike. Sue and Dim were preparing to depart for Sydney.

I am 8 Weeks Old Today,,,

,,, and not that I am counting, I have grown a whole 10cm since I was born. I am being measured here in inches. Mom recons that its easier for the camera to see the numbers - or something like that. And also when my Great Grandmother in Canada sees me in this photo she will know what the numbers mean.
