Common Myna's in the Front Yard


I took this pic from inside the house, with the vertical blinds just open enough for the zoom lens to 'see' thru. This is one photo from a series that I too. Interestingly, in all the pics at least one of the birds was taking a huge amount of interest in what i was doing.

The Common Myna is brown with a black head. It has a yellow bill, legs and bare eye skin. In flight it shows large white wing patches. The Common Myna is a member of the starling family and is also known as the Indian Myna or Indian Mynah.
The Common Myna is sometimes confused with the slightly larger (24 cm - 29 cm) Noisy Miner, Manorina melanocephala. Although both species have similar common names, the Noisy Miner is actually a native honeyeater. Both have yellow bills, legs and bare eye skin, but the Common Myna is brown with a black head and in flight it shows large white wing patches. The Noisy Miner is mostly grey.
The Common Myna is found along the east and south-east coasts of Australia. Introduced at Melbourne from south-east Asia between 1862 and 1872, it established quickly, with several other introductions occurring until the 1950's.
Common Mynas mate for life. During the breeding season there is usually considerable competition for nesting sites. Favoured locations are in the walls and ceilings of buildings, making these birds a nuisance to humans. Nests are also placed in tree hollows, which are used by native birds. Nests are quite messy and consist of a variety of materials. Leaves, grasses, feathers and assorted items of rubbish are common materials.
Violent battles often erupt between occupants of nesting sites and the couple that wish to evict them. Each partner grapples with its opposite number and contestants drop to the ground secured in each other's claws. Bills are jabbed ruthlessly at the opponent. Finally, the defeated couple leaves to search for another site.
The Common Myna was introduced into the cane fields of north-eastern Queensland in 1883, to combat insect pests, particularly plague locusts and cane beetles. Other releases occurred, and by the 1940s and 1950s it was established in many eastern metropolitan areas. Failed introductions were made at Launceston, Tasmania in 1900 and later in 1955. Some sightings have occurred since, however, probably of birds that have flown there from the mainland. In southern Asia Common Mynas are not generally considered pests, as flocks follow the plough to feast on the insects and grubs turned up with the soil. In Australia, however, their fruit-eating habits make them a pest of fruit trees, especially figs. Birds are also responsible for picking off seedlings in market gardens.

New Holland Honeyeater



I had been trying to get a pic of this elusive little fella for some time now. A very active bird, it just didn't sit still for long enough to get a good pic. Sue drops down picks up our new camera walks outside and the little devil just posed for her.



Below from Wiki: The New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae) is found throughout southern Australia. It is around eighteen centimetres long, is mainly black, with a white iris, white facial tufts and yellow margins on its wing and tail feathers. It is a very active bird and it rarely sits long enough to give an extended view. When danger approaches a New Holland Honeyeater, such as a bird of prey, a group of Honeyeaters will form together and give a warning call. Sexes are similar in looks with the exception that females are, on average, slightly smaller. Younger Honeyeaters are mostly brown and have grey eyes.
The breeding behaviour of the New Holland Honeyeater has been relatively well documented. In southern and eastern Australia, breeding commonly occurs during autumn and spring, although certain coastal populations may breed at any time of the year given suitable conditions including sufficient food and absence of adverse weather. In Western Australia, New Holland Honeyeaters have been observed to breed once annually from July to November, when nectar is abundant (McFarland, 1985). They appear to be a socially monogamous bird with no sign of co-operative breeding, but this observation is yet to be examined genetically (McFarland, 1985). In breeding territories, males spend a large proportion of their time defending the nest and food resources, while the females invest a large proportion of their time in reproductive labour including nest construction, incubation, and a majority of the nestling care (McFarland, 1985; Clarke and Clarke, 1999). However, it is important to note that these roles are not completely strict (Lambert and Oorebeek, observation). It is also common for females to utilise food resources that are in close proximity to the nest, while males venture further afield, toward the outskirts of the territory. They primarily feed on nectar, although a large part of their diet may also consist of insects (Clarke and Clarke, 1999; Kleindorfer et al, 2006).
New Holland Honeyeaters obtain most of their carbohydrate requirements from the nectar of flowers. Subsequently, they are key pollinators of many flowering plant species, many of which are endemic to Australia such as Banksia, Hakea, Xanthorrhoea (Yacka), and Acacia. New Holland Honeyeaters may also consume honeydew, a sugary secretion produced by members of the family Psyllidae. Despite feeding primarily on nectar, New Holland Honeyeaters are not strictly nectarivorous. Nectar does not contain protein so New Holland Honeyeaters must supplement their diet with invertebrates such as spiders and crickets that are rich in protein. They sometimes feed alone but they usually gather in large groups.

Yep, it was a Great Egret


Same place in Stingray Bay, but this tiem I managed to get a photo.


Description
The Great Egret's overall plumage is white, and, for most of the year, when not breeding, the bill and facial skin are yellow. The feet are dark olive-grey or sooty black, as are the legs. During the breeding season, the bill turns mostly black and the facial skin becomes green. Also at this time, long hair-like feathers (nuptial plumes) hang across the lower back, and the legs become pinkish-yellow at the top. Young Great Egrets are similar to the adults, but have a blackish tip to the bill.
Similar species
The Great Egret can be confused with other white egrets found in Australia. It can be distinguished by the length of its neck, which is greater than the length of its body (and with a noticeable kink two-thirds of the way up), a dark line extending from the base of the bill to behind the eye and the overall larger size.
Where does it live?
Distribution
Great Egrets occur throughout most of the world. They are common throughout Australia, with the exception of the most arid areas.
Habitat
Great Egrets prefer shallow water, particularly when flowing, but may be seen on any watered area, including damp grasslands. Great Egrets can be seen alone or in small flocks, often with other egret species, and roost at night in groups.
What does it do?
Feeding
The Great Egret usually feeds alone. It feeds on molluscs, amphibians, aquatic insects, small reptiles, crustaceans and occasionally other small animals, but fish make up the bulk of its diet. The Great Egret usually hunts in water, wading through the shallows, or standing motionless before stabbing at prey. Birds have also been seen taking prey while in flight.
Breeding
The Great Egret breeds in colonies, and often in association with cormorants, ibises and other egrets. Both sexes construct the nest, which is a large platform of sticks, placed in a tree over the water. The previous years' nest may often be re-used. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young (usually two or three).

Bird Watch


Spring must be close - saw a couple of Pied Oystercatchers with a chick today - thought it was noteworthy. Both adults had id bands, the chick was not banded leading me to believe it must have been recently hatched. Did some research and got some info on this bird from Wiki....


The Pied Oystercatcher, Haematopus longirostris, is a species of oystercatcher. It is a wading bird native to Australia and commonly found on its coastline. The similar South Island Pied Oystercatcher (H. finschi) occurs in New Zealand.
Description
The name "oystercatcher" is something of a misnomer for this species, because they seldom eat oysters, which are found mainly on rocky coastlines. Pied Oystercatchers frequent sandy coastines, where they feed mainly on bivalve molluscs, which are prised apart with their specially adapted bill.
This Australian species is easily recognized by the characteristic 5–8 cm long orange-red beak, slender pink legs and black and white plumage. With the wings extended, a white wing-stripe is also visible. The male and female show little differentiation, except that the males generally sport a shorter, wider beak.
Habits
Pied Oystercatchers feed mainly on bivalve molluscs, but also take other invertebrates. The techniques they use to break open the shells of the molluscs vary greatly and are thought to be learned behavior.
They nest in shallow scrapes made in open areas near the shore and produce 2-3 eggs in a typical clutch. Each couple protects its nesting area and often uses the same area year after year. Like the gulls they share the shore with, Oystercatchers will band together to mob a perceived threat.
Conservation Status
The Pied Oystercatcher is considered Federally to be 'secure' and in NSW, Australia is listed as 'vulnerable'.

Also saw an Egret but couldn't be sure if it was a Great Egret or a Cattle Egret. More likely the former, as it was wading in the shallows of Stingray Bay looking for molluscs in the sand.

We made the Big Purchase




Well, we did it we upgraded the camera. And we are feeling particularly thrilled with our choice - an Olympus SP-570 UZ. Did lots of research on DSLR's and had almost settled on a Nikon P80 or a Canon equiv., which would have cost between $1,500 to $3,000 for starters when I came across the the concept of a 'bridge camera'. The Olympus (which cost $700 with card and bag) is an Ultra Zoom compact digital camera and offers almost all the capability of a DSLR, but without the need to buy half a dozen lenses to meet all the possible scenarios.




When they say ultra zoom they realy mean it - its a wopping 20x. From the shore, you can pick out the brand of the wetsuits the guys are wearing in the surf at Bells.

Needing a New Camera


These days each time we go out we take the little Olympus digital camera with us. Its just so convenient. Means we can get get shots of unexpected things. Problem is we are becoming more discerning about the quality of the pics we take. So now we are looking for a digital SLR camera for those special shots. For example - at Pt Lonsdale yesterday, the 'Princes of the Netherlands' was moored in the Rip and the ocean swells behind her were just awesome. Took a pic, but just couldn't do it justice.
