Geelong Festival of Sail

Best weather we have experienced since doing the trip to Melbourne and back again. there was always enough breeze and not too much.

This year we didn't race. We took peregrine up on the Wednesday, stayed overnight at Docklands and returned on the Aust Day Holiday - Thursday.

Crew up was Barry, Dave Collins, Gaye, Clive and myself.

Dave stepped off and Tessa, Doug Jarvis and Wendy joined us for the return trip.

Black Heart Sasafras Hall Table

This little hall table is made from Black Heart Sassafras. Only partially finished here. There is a bunch more shellac to apply to bring the colour of the timber up to its best. Sassifras is native to Australia and the black heart is only found in Tasmania where a bacteria discolours the timber without any effect to its integrity. I purchased the timber from gentleman Doug when he decided to hang up his saw. Doug found the log in Tasmania about 15 years ago and got a local sawmill to slab it for him at a reasonable price. He regretted the project a little when he was charged an indecent amount to ship the trailer load of timber back to Geelong.

Here is my 100mm three jaw chuck. Just need a backing plate with 1 1/2 inch x 8 tpi back plate for my Hercus lathe.

At the same time I also rewarded myself with a couple more planes....and a Tormek 1200 sharpener.  Why oh why am I doing this the those that will succeed me??
