Spent the best part of this weekend at home and discovered 3D band saw models. The first to wet the appetite was a rain deer out of Victorian Ash. Gaye was delighted with this and furiously sanded it to a beautifully smooth finish. We figured that it was destined for the mouths of one or both of the grandchildren so rather than give it a quick lick with the tried and true Danish Oil, searched the net and the Woodwork forums for the best child friendly application. It turns out that the age old Shellac is deemed the best. So off to Bunnings to buy some shellac flakes. To cut a long story short - a very distressed gay arrives in the workshop with a very stained rain deer. When applying the shellac with steel wool (as was suggested in the instructions, the steel and the resin in the wood reacted with the shellac causing a nasty stain. A bunch of sanding later had restored the rain deer, and application of wax had it looking beautiful and smooth. Will have to wait until the grandchildren are less orally inclined or find out how child friendly the wax is before letting them at it.
By the end of the weekend we had a whale, a camel and a coyote/cactus. The coyote and cactus are the same carving. Just different sides.
