Last weekend we sailed Peregrine from Melbourne to Geelong in the last race of the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) Winter Series. This used to be the Melbourne to Hastings Race, but due to their size many of the larger boats couldn't stop at Hastings at the end of the race and had to turn around after a 6 - 8 race and return to Melbourne.
Peregrine was defending boat in the IRC Division Div 2 as she won it last year.
Barry is not shy when it comes to a gutsy start giving Logs on the bow a grat view of the action.
The photos showing the size of the boats around us would suggest we were punching well above our weight.
Impeccable timing had us at second boat from pole position on the line and plenty of water under us. The boat above us in the pic is Ninety Seven. Great close up shot of her with the start boat in the background. The gold painted boat - Goldfinger was early and called OCS and had to restart.
Our great start delivered us first boat around the top mark in our division. In the pic bow to stern: Logs and Ryan sorting out the pole, Charlot sorting out the safety lines. Russel waiting for Geoff to get out of the way.

Popped a spinnaker, kept that place for the 5 mile down winder.

We were pointing higher and footing faster on the third leg (a 10 mile beat up into Altona) and covered the next three boats behind us. Over the last 1/2 mile we were caught on the right side of the course with a 20 deg shift to the West. Not good. This allowed 3 boats who were originally well behind to catch up. By the time we got to the top mark we had lost three places and about 5 minutes. That dashed our hopes for a back to back wins. We slugged it out with the other Sydney 36 for the rest of the day and clawed back some time cutting it close to the muscle beds and staying left up the Portarlington side of the course. Finally finished 2nd IRC and 18th on Performance Handicap. How about you buy the handicapper a beer Barry?
